In a newly published video, Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emphasizes this year’s World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the future: safety first!”
According to Dominguez, when we think about maritime safety, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) often comes to mind. In 2024, the industry celebrates 50 years since this treaty was adopted.
We can be proud of the crucial role SOLAS has played in setting international safety standards for ship construction, equipment, and operation. It has been key in preventing maritime disasters and protecting lives.
… the Secretary General said, emphasizing that this year’s World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” calls for a collective effort to keep up with the ongoing changes in the shipping industry.
What is the World Maritime Day?
World Maritime Day is an annual event observed on the last Thursday of September to celebrate the maritime industry’s contribution to global trade and the world economy. It highlights the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the marine environment.
Each year, a theme is chosen to focus on specific aspects of the maritime industry. World Maritime Day serves as an opportunity for governments, maritime organizations, industry stakeholders, and the public to raise awareness about maritime issues, discuss challenges facing the sector, and promote sustainable practices in shipping.
I encourage all stakeholders to observe World Maritime Day on September 26th. Join the conversation online using the hashtag #WorldMaritimeDay. Let’s all work together to navigate the future with safety as our top priority.
