As part of their Good Catch series, American P&I has published a safety animation to inform interested parties of the safety risks improper ventilation poses.
Proper ventilation is extremely important for all cargoes and fire safety. A lack of, or improper, ventilation can lead to the build-up of condensation (also known as sweating). It is also critical to be able to properly close vents in the event of a cargo hold or engine room fire, the American Club reminds.
Good Catch series takes into account that although every company’s safety management system is different, there is a common theme that all seafarers’ situational awareness and personal responsibility is tantamount to their own safety, that of their shipmates, the marine environment, cargo and the ship alike.
This initiative is a combination of short and focused guidance concentrated directly to the attention of seafarers to assure their understanding that:
- When you identify a hazard before someone gets hurt, it’s a Good Catch.
- When you fix a problem before something bad happens, it’s a Good Catch.
- When you take responsibility for your own safety, that’s a Good Catch too.
