Viking Line is operating its vessels, Viking Glory and Viking Grace, on the Turku-Stockholm route solely on liquefied biogas (LBG) for one week, starting 29 August 2024.
According to SEA-LNG, this switch will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90% compared to liquefied natural gas (LNG), which itself reduces emissions by 15% compared to heavy fuel oil. The vessels will emit 2,600 fewer tonnes of greenhouse gases during the week, equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of 270 Finns.
We have invested 450 million euros in our climate-smart vessels Viking Grace and Viking Glory, and one of their most important features is that they can run on LNG, biofuel and future synthetic fuels produced from renewable energy. Such significant environmental measures are the result of our long-term work.

This initiative follows Viking Line’s €450 million investment in vessels capable of using LNG, biofuel, and future synthetic fuels. The biogas is supplied by Gasum and is produced from food and agricultural waste in Europe.
Gasum is very happy to support Viking Line in opening this historic week-long green corridor on the Baltic Sea. This is a clear and concrete demonstration that the green transition in maritime transport is possible with tools available already today.
