MV Dali container ship that crashed into the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, carrying 56 containers of hazardous materials, according to Jennifer Homendy, the head of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
According to Jennifer Homendy, MV Dali’s cargo included corrosives, flammables, and miscellaneous hazardous materials, potentially including lithium-ion batteries. Fortunately, the Key Bridge collapse has not been declared a chemical-related emergency, but this could change as more information becomes available.
As Jennifer Homendy informs, the total amount of hazardous materials onboard was 764 tons. Unfortunately, some of the containers carrying hazardous materials were breached.
To remind, the vessel was headed to Colombo, Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lanka was unaware of the presence of dangerous goods. The ship was expected to declare the contents of its containers 72 hours before arriving at the Colombo Port. Sri Lanka Customs and the Colombo Port have been instructed to conduct an investigation.
