As the South American Maritime Safety Authority reported, six people lost their lives in a fire incident, that took place at the port of Durban. SAMSA is moving forward to an investigation to find out the factors that caused the fire on February 14.
The fishing vessel known as the ‘TROPICAL 1’ was Mozambique registered and the agency was in the process of formally making contact with the Mozambican authorities to inform them about the incident.
Specifically, SAMSA noted that the fishing vessel was docked at the port harbour for repair operations when it caught on fire.
From the six casualties, five were Mozambican, whereas one crew member was of Portuguese origin.
Moreover, onboard the vessel, there were additional 12 members, that SAMSA has scheduled to meet them for a statement on February 22.
The Authority reported that the inspections concerning the vessel will take place as soon as the conditions allowed.
Also, the fire caused the vessel to list on the port side.
Concluding, firefighters helped to save the vessel from an overall destruction.
