The US warship ‘USS Fitzgerald’ suffered another damage, as on Sunday two punctures occurred to its hull, while it was being loaded on a heavy lift ship, in order to be transported from Japan to the US.
The warship was damaged after it collided on June with an NYK containership, and was headed to Mississippi in order to be repaired.
However, it was forced to go to Yokosuka, Japan, after it was damaged by the heavy lift vessel Transshelf’s steel supports during loading, while it was loading.
The repairs for the two new punctures will delay the loading process for a few days, after which Transshelf, will transport the US warship to Huntington Ingalls Industries, in Mississippi to be further repaired.
Prior to the incident, significant repair progress had been made in Japan, where the ship was being prepared for the journey. The work for this process included dewatering, defueling, hull and superstructure repairs and placing key systems in layup maintenance, according to sources.
On June 17, 2017, a NYK containership collided with the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald off the coast of Shimoda in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan. On June 19th, US Navy confirmed that all seven missing sailors from the USS Fitzgerald were found dead in flooded berthing compartments.
