Amid the COVID-19 situation, a crewmember onboard the aircraft carrier “USS Theodore Roosevelt” lost his life of complications related to the disease. In fact, the sailor was the first active-duty military member which died due to coronavirus.
Specifically, the sailor was tested COVID-19 positive on 30 March, when he was put in isolation along with four other sailors at the US Navy base on Guamhe.
In light of the situation, the sailors received medical checks twice daily from Navy medical teams.
“The navy is taking this measure to maintain the strike group’s warfighting capability while ensuring the safety of the crew”… the navy said in a statement.
On 9 April, he was found unresponsive during a medical check and was moved to a local hospital’s intensive care unit.
The sailor’s death was the first among the crew of around 4.860 of whom 585 had been tested positive for coronavirus.
Following the situation, around 4.000 crew members were moved ashore with a number kept onboard to attend to the ship’s nuclear reactors and other systems.
During the weekend, another four Roosevelt’s crewmembers were transmitted to the hospital due to coronavirus symptoms. All were in a steady condition, while none of them needed intensive care or ventilators.
