The US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced that it launched a Virtual Archaeology Museum. The museum shows video, detailed 3D models and mosaic maps of shipwrecks mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries.
These shipwrecks were discovered via underwater research and oil and gas exploration. Using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and underwater videography, surveys of these shipwrecks with high details were made possible.

In addition, computer technology had advanced enough to provide photo-real and hyper-accurate 3D models, which are created from two-dimensional imagery.
What is more, professional or even amateur scientists will now be able to monitor the shipwrecks at any time, analyzing them, as well as their artifacts.
They will also be able to observe the various aquatic species that the area accommodates.
