The US added China’s CNOOC to its economic blacklist, accusing the oil giant of helping China intimidate neighbors in the South China Sea.
IS also added China’s Skyrizon to the Military End-User (MEU) List over its ability to develop military products including aircraft engines, restricting its access to U.S. exports.
According to Reuters, the Trump administration has kept up the pressure in its final days, targeting what Washington sees as Beijing’s attempt to use corporations as a way to leverage civilian technologies for military purposes.
Companies on this list must be granted a special license from the Commerce Department before they can receive exports of high-tech items from U.S. suppliers.
The United States has been opposing to China’s expansive territorial claims on the possibly resource-rich South China Sea. Washington accuses China of seeking to intimidate other Southeast Asian coastal states.
As for China, it says that the US has sought to increase controversy over maritime sovereignty claims in the area and has tried to destabilize the region by sending US military ships and planes to the South China Sea.
