The UK Department for Transport published the report on port connectivity, called “Transport infrastructure for our global future: a study of England’s port connectivity.” The report includes a number of recommendations to improve the UK ports.
The study focuses at the current challenges and opportunities for port and freight connectivity, and makes specific recommendations which the government and industry can work together to achieve. The report has been developed in cooperation with Network Rail, Highways England, the port and wider freight industry, and its customers.
Moreover, “Transport infrastructure for our global future: a study of England’s port connectivity” establishes a vision for the development of the English port sector and measures to improve innovation by government and industry.
Currently, around 95% of all goods entering and leaving Britain are moved by sea and the port sector directly contributes £1.7 billion to the UK economy.

As part of UK’s wider commitment, the government will invest over £60 billion to improve the transport networks as a whole, including freight connectivity.
Nusrat Ghani MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport and Assistant Government Whip, mentioned:
This connectivity supports the movement of everything to and from our ports which are vital to our everyday lives from providing fuel to our power stations to generate electricity for our homes, to transporting the produce to our supermarkets so we have food to eat.
