This summer, Maersk is set to expand its fleet with the addition of two more methanol-enabled vessels, scheduled for service entry in August.
As Vincent Clerc CEO, A.P. Moller – Maersk, shared in a linked in post, the ships will be christened in ceremonies held by Nike and Vestas in Denmark and the United States, respectively. The introduction of these methanol-enabled vessels is a significant step forward in Maersk’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint and accelerate the maritime industry’s energy transition.
We have the vessels and the determination to accelerate the energy transition. Now, we urgently need a global maritime fuel standard and pricing mechanism to truly make a difference and support large-scale green fuel projects.
… said Maersk CEO
To remind, Maersk was company behind the world’s fist container vessel sailing on methanol, which also took place in the first-ever ship-to-ship methanol bunkering operation.
Overall, methanol, as an alternative fuel, offers a promising solution to the environmental challenges faced by the shipping sector. In 2024, DNV’s AFI database has already recorded a staggering 70 new orders for methanol-fueled vessels, constituting a remarkable 56% of all alternative-fueled vessel orders this year.
