Two officers of the ‘MSC Giannina’ container ship have been reportedly arrested at the port of Genoa, over suspicions of involvement in the disappearance of the ship’s master, on 19 October, while underway in the Tyrrhenian sea.
According to media cover at that time, the Mediterranean Shipping Company- operated ship was en route from Gioia Tauro to Genoa, Italy, when the crew realised that the man was missing.
International sources say that the two men, both of Ukrainian nationality, are suspected to have killed the Captain and thrown the body into the sea while the ship was heading to Genoa. As a result, and in request of the prosecutor Marcello Maresca, the two officers were arrested and were further interrogated by the police on Wednesday.
As soon as the ship arrived in Genoa, all the crew members were questioned as well, and a blood spot found on the ship induced further investigation, international media reported.
The ship is still moored at Genoa.
