The Turkish Cypriot government officially informed that the Gecitkale Airport will from now on be a base for the landing Turkish drones. Those drones are escorting drill ships which are searching for hydrocarbons in the eastern Mediterranean. In light of the situation, a Turkish military drone was delivered to northern Cyprus today, on 16 December.
Specifically, the “Bayraktar TB2″ drone landed in Geçitkale airport, in Famagusta at about 7am GMT today.

As Demiroren news agency reported, the airport will allow the entry to unarmed and armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as its is scheduled from 16th December to start take off from the Northern Turkey airport, in order to accompany the Turkish ships drilling for oil and gas in Cypriot sovereign waters.
The protection of Turkish Cypriot rights and interests is the main priority.

Overall, earlier this year, Turkey started seeking oil and gas off the Cyprus coast while two drill ships and one exploration vessel were accompanied by an UAVs to monitor and protect them. On the other hand the European Union calls the above-mentioned activities illegal and for its response has imposed sanctions against Turkey.
