The Norwegian salvage tug Sea1 Ruby reached the Maersk Sana on May 16, a vessel which has been adrift for three weeks following an explosion onboard.
The tug, operated by Sea1 Offshore, was selected for its capabilities despite being a considerable distance away. Equipped with 28,000 brake horsepower and a 310-ton bollard pull, the tug is now towing the ship to Freeport in the Bahamas, with an expected arrival in the last week of May.
The Maersk Sana, an 8,450 TEU container ship, suffered a serious engine room explosion on April 28 while en route from Newark to Singapore, approximately 254 nautical miles east of Bermuda. The explosion injured three crew members, one critically, while severely damaging the propulsion system, leaving the ship adrift with only auxiliary power and limited maneuverability. The vessel had passed a standard inspection in Charleston just 12 days prior, with no deficiencies reported.
Maersk confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing, emphasizing that safety remains a top priority. The company continues to update stakeholders and customers to minimize supply chain disruptions.
