The Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC, is developing its reefer container fleet and tries to look for new technologies to give a direct solution to the growing demand for fruit around the world. Kiwi fruit is on high demand across the globe, and most importantly with Chinese customers.
Mainly, Italy is the world’s second kiwi producer. Therefore, MSC is actively assisting producers transfer kiwi in cold containers.
Vincenzo Tomassetti, Reefer Manager for MSC in Italy commented on the cold kiwi transmit from Italy to China that
MSC is responding to these trends by providing advanced reefer technology that is required by our partners and shippers to ensure the product reaches on time to its destination in perfect condition.
Moreover, the cold kiwi shipments occur under cold treatment to keep the fruit fresh and avoid transference of unwanted pests. The coldchain is controlled 24/7 until the product is delivered to the customer.

According to MSC’s statement, the kiwi demand is expected to rise significantly in Asian countries, especially since it is expanding in middle class. That will bring many opportunities to the producers and the shippers.
Finally, the Chinese middle class is forecasted to exceed 600 million people in the coming years. Fruit imports were around 4 million tons in 2017 and expected to grow further.
