Hostage rescue attempt of the pirate held MV Iceberg 1
Three pirates were killed after they clashed with Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) near a coastal town in Puntland during a hostage rescue attempt of the pirate held MV Iceberg 1, Garowe Online reports.
According to Puntland officials, the forces clashed with pirates who were attempting to transport weapons and ammunition to the pirates on board the Iceberg 1 vessel, resulting in 3 pirates killed and 3 other pirates captured.
The MV Iceberg 1 was hijacked on March 29, 2010 about 10 nautical miles off the port of Aden, Yemen, outside the International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC). It was carrying a mixed cargo of general mechanical equipment and was bound for Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates.
The vessel was originally carrying 24 crew members consisting of nationals from Yemen, India, Ghana, Sudan, Pakistan and the Philippines. One of the crew members, committed suicide on October 27, 2010 by jumping overboard.
