‘Anatoly Krasheninnikov’ sank in the Sea of Okhotsk, having with 13 people on board. Ten people were saved, but three people are unaccounted for. The aerial search for them has been stopped for now due to difficult weather conditions. The ship was carrying 280 tonnes of construction materials and equipment.
However, as the TASS news agency reports, the ship had unauthorized passengers on board. Namely, the ship’s crew list had 10 names, but the crew consisted of only eight.
What is more, four crew members on the ship’s crew list were not at the ship, with other people being on board instead of them. Moreover, five passengers did not have authorization to be on the ship, but the port’s chief learned this after the ship had left the port.
In order to find out the cause of the incident, the Far Eastern department of Russia’s Investigative Committee is now considering three versions of the accident. The first one regards violation of rules for navigation and cargo loading, the second involves a technical malfunction, while the third considers unfavorable weather conditions.
