Novatek announced that its joint venture Yamal LNG has began initial production of LNG at the plant’s third LNG train. The overall nameplate capacity of all three LNG trains is 16.5 mmtpa, or 5.5 mmtpa per LNG train.
Novatek launched all three LNG trains from Yamal LNG project more than one year ahead of the planned original schedule.
What is more, the fourth LNG train at Yamal LNG will be based on Novatek’s liquefaction technology ‘Arctic Cascade’ and will use Russian-manufactured equipment.
In another important milestone, earlier in November, Novatek Gas and Power Asia, that it has shipped its first LNG produced cargo from the Yamal LNG project to China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), through the Northern Sea Route, as part of its plans to expand customer base in China.
As the diminishing Arctic sea ice is opening new shipping routes, the Northern Sea Route has revealed a new potential for natural energy cargo transport. In this regard, Chinese major COSCO Shipping Corporation and Japanese MOL have jointly invested in ships with new ice-breaking capabilities able to carry LNG from Yamal LNG to LNG markets across the globe. The first three ships started delivery this year.
