The winners across the eight green shipping categories who walked with a GREEN4SEA Award were announced at a prestigious ceremony which took place on Tuesday 12th of March, 2019 at the Yacht Club of Greece, Piraeus. The awards focus exclusively on initiatives and individuals who foster Environmental Excellence & Sustainable Shipping, following a combination of open nomination and audience-vote.
The winners of the 2019 GREEN4SEA Awards are:
Blue Planet Shipping Ltd received the GREEN4SEA Dry Bulk Operator Award, sponsored by V.Ships, for its commitment to environmental protection, putting sustainability policies into action. The company manages the world’s first bulk carrier, MV Afros, equipped with a Flettner Rotor System for Wind Assisted Propulsion based on the Magnus Effect. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: ESL Shipping, Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL), Orion Bulkers GMBH & CO KG and Star Bulk Carriers Corporation.

Navigator Gas LLC received the GREEN4SEA Tanker Operator Award, sponsored by Argo Navis, for setting a pioneering direction toward greener shipping with the decision to burn ethane. Navigator Aurora, equipped with a dual fuel (HFO/LNG) burning engine when delivered in August 2016, became the first ship that was successfully converted to a dual fuel (HFO/Ethane) engine in August 2018. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: EXMAR, Hellespont Group, Odfjell Group and Thenamaris.
MAN Energy Solutions received the GREEN4SEA Technology Award, sponsored by Dorian LPG, for its LPG fuelled ME-LGIP 2-stroke MAN B&W engines for propulsion of merchant ships. The engine is also able to burn the liquid parts in the volatile organic compounds (VOC) and can be retrofitted on approx. 3,000 of MAN B&W ME-C engines already in operation. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: CS & Associates S.A., The Fjords and The Ocean Cleanup.
IWSA received the GREEN4SEA Initiative Award, sponsored by Capital Ship Management, for taking many initiatives for introducing modern wind propulsion as a clean solution for ships. Recently, the first installations of wind propulsion devices by Viking Lines and Maersk Tankers have begun to operate on vessels, showing the great importance and potential wind propulsion is given by the shipping industry. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: BEMA, EGCSA, probunkers and Sustainable Shipping Initiative.
Clean Shipping Alliance 2020 received the GREEN4SEA Clean Shipping Award, sponsored by SQE MARINE Group, for representing a group of leading companies that have taken efforts through significant investments in research and analysis, funding and committing resources to comply with 2020 fuel requirements through the development and use of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS). Other short-listed nominees for this category were: ABS, Ecoslops, Evac and Lean Marine.
Port of Valencia received the GREEN4SEA Port Award, sponsored by World LPGA, for becoming the first port in Europe to use hydrogen energy to reduce the environmental impact of its operations by supporting H2Ports; a pilot project which focuses on using renewable energy with the installation of a mobile hydrogen supply station. Other short-listed nominees for this category were: Port of Amsterdam, Port of Helsinki, Port of Montreal and Port of San Diego.
Mr. Panos Zachariadis, Technical Director, Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management Ltd, received the GREEN4SEA Personality Award, sponsored by ABS, for contributing to the Hellenic Shipping Industry on various technical and environmental aspects. Mr. Zachariadis has contributed to the development of several well-known regulations, such as GBS, PSPC, FSA, and the prevention of others (e.g. double hull bulk carriers). Furthermore, he has written numerous technical guides, papers and articles and has received global recognition for promoting Greek Shipping internationally.
Mr. George Tsavliris, CYMEPA received the 2019 GREEN4SEA Leadership Award, sponsored by Arcadia Shipmanagement, for his leadership role within CYMEPA and other national and international Associations. Mr. George Tsavliris is a Principal at ‘Tsavliris Salvage Group’ and represents the business on both a commercial and environmental basis internationally. He holds the position of Past Chairman of INTERMEPA and Chairman of CYMEPA. Also, he is Board Member of ECSA, Board Member of The Yacht Club of Greece, Board Member of Friends of Hellas Liberty Association and the Jubilee Sailing Trust in the UK and Honorary Chairman of the Tsavliris Cultural Foundation.
