With the ratification of the Ballast Water Management and Sediment Control convention approaching and the USCG requiring new ships to have Ballast Water Treatment System on their delivery, the treatment of ballast water is becoming a reality.
With the installation of BWTS on new buildings being a ship yard responsibility, the shipping community has started investigating the installation of BWTS on board existing vessels, too. Therefore, a number of specific steps should be followed for a successful and time effective installation of a BWTS on board an existing vessel. Having said that, the aim of this article is to support the owners on planning this process from the day they decide to install a system till its start up.
