The IMO campaign aims to raise awareness and offer greater support to the worlds invisible workforce of seafarers
Teekay Shipping is leading the way in the Sailors Societys fundraising initiative to honour the International Maritime Organizations (IMO) Year of the Seafarer campaign. The IMO campaign aims to raise awareness and offer greater support to the worlds invisible workforce of seafarers and the Sailors Society is embracing this by asking organisations and individuals to donate 1 for every one of the 375,000 seafarers they aim to reach in 2010.
Teekay Shipping have contributed 14,000 ($20,000) to this fundraising drive, each pound of their donation representing 14,000 of the seafarers who will be given a helping hand with practical and spiritual support by the charitys Port Chaplains this year.
John Adams, Managing Director of Teekay Shipping (Glasgow) Ltd., said:
We appreciate our seafarers every day of every year, but in 2010, to celebrate the Year of the Seafarer, we will pay a special tribute to the men and women who make up an integral part of our company. As part of this, we want to recognise the role our seafarers play in Teekays success but also recognise the risks and sacrifices each makes in his or her choice to have a career at sea, and the families that support them.
We are also delighted to acknowledge the Year of the Seafarer through our support of the Sailors Society. This complements a series of activities we will be undertaking in recognition of this initiative. Our people are our most important assets and we are pleased to be able to make a gesture to the industry globally in support of all Seafarers.
Jan Webber, Sailors Society Director of Fundraising & Marketing, said, We are extremely grateful to Teekay Shipping for their generous support which will enable us to continue our work assisting seafarers in need.
The funds raised will allow the Sailors Society to continue their vital work in ports where there are few or no services, and also provide a way for everyone to show their solidarity with hard working seafarers.
The Sailors Society is an international charity that provides a personal lifeline for seafarers throughout the world. Existing to enrich and enhance the well-being of the worlds 1.2 million seafarers, the charity offers practical help, emotional and spiritual support and, when in dire need, financial assistance and family liaison through our Port Chaplains and Seafarers Centres. Our Port Chaplains visit thousands of ships every year, directly addressing the needs of seafarers – irrespective of a persons belief or nationality – as well as maintaining vital links within the Ports that they operate.
The Sailors Society is backing the IMO Year of the Seafarer campaign with a new fundraising drive asking for just 1 for every seafarer the charity aims to reach in 2010.
