Tanzania government plans to launch a special program to control maritime environment against pollution since the country has plans to enter into the gas and oil economy soon.
Director of Maritime Security and Safety in Tanzania Captain Mussa Mandia said that there is need for principles to control environmental degradation which could be caused by massive activities related to the big crude oil pipeline through Tanga port.
Local news reports that Capt Mandia said the country must get well prepared to curb any kind of future environmental pollution and ensure the ocean remains safe for other activities and living creatures.
“Because our country is heading to the oil and gas economy, the question of preserving the ocean environment is inevitable to ensure that such economic activities don’t affect ocean creatures, including fishes…we are concerned about the environment, that is why the government is launching the special programme,” he stated.
He said since the crude oil pipeline was a big project, Tanga residents needed awareness about the maritime activities and the question of environment.
