Emergency after ships collide near Yangshan port

26 containers on board fell into the water Government teams on Tuesday boarded a foreign cargo ship after fumes were reported in a cabin following a collision with another ship, reported Shanghai Daily.Officials said the situation was "under control" after a container of inflammable chemical goods was taken off the ship.No one was injured in the incident, said officials, but they were still monitoring for possible pollution.Two foreign cargo ships, CSAV Petorca and CCNI Rimac, had collided near the Yangshan port around noon on Tuesday, said the Shanghai Marine Search and Rescue Center.One cabin on the CCNI Rimac was damaged and water leaked in, said the center.Officials said 26 containers on board fell into the water.The ship requested to dock at the port after the collision but was told to stay in nearby waters so that emergency workers could get on board to check out the situation.They found that the inflammable goods had reacted with leaking water and caused the fumes, officials said, adding that there was the possibility of explosions.The crew was evacuated while emergency workers tried to move other containers off the ship.City marine authorities said that they were looking for the missing containers. Shanghai ready for the 4th phase of Yangshan Port expansion

This project will increase handling capacity of the deep-water port more than 40% Shanghai is about to start the fourth phase of the expansion of the Yangshan Port, a project that will add more than 40 per cent to the handling capacity of the deep-water port.The city government, awaiting a nod from the National Development and Reform Commission, plans to spend more than US$1.554 billion on the development of new deep-water berths, according to Wang Xuan, chief engineer with Shanghai Tongsheng Investment, in charge of building the Yangshan port, reported the South China Morning Post.The expanded project, expected to be completed in 2015, will have an annual capacity of four million TEUs.Shanghai, the world's busiest container port, handled 29 million TEUs last year. At Yangshan, which became operational at the end of 2005, the throughput last year topped 10 million TEUs, exceeding its designed capacity of 9.3 million based on its three completed phases."The timing of expansion is in compliance with the real business growth," Wang said."We were prepared for this new phase of construction."
