World's first illegal fishing notification system launched

Fighting against illegal fishing, the Australian research organization CSIRO announced that it is developing the world’s first notification system that alerts authorities, when offending vessels arrive in port. The web-based reporting tool identifies and ranks vessels across the globe based on a list of behaviours associated with illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.

Prysmian to supply first renewable energy-powered vessel

Prysmian Group announced that it entered in a partnership with the research institute CEA Liten, to provide cables on the Energy Observer, the world’s first catamaran powered solely by renewable sources. The vessel is committed to a six-year trip around the world, building a consensus about new solutions for a cleaner future.

World’s first remotely operated commercial vessel presented

Rolls-Royce and Svitzer have demonstrated the world’s first remotely operated commercial vessel in Copenhagen harbour, Denmark. The companies have also signed an agreement to continue their cooperation to test remote and autonomous operations for vessels, such as autonomous navigation, situational awareness, remote control centre and communication.

Ship-to-ship LNG bunkering starts in Zeebrugge port

The bunkering vessel ENGIE Zeebrugge performed in the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, its first deliveries of LNG as a marine fuel to two new gas-propelled pure car and truck carriers of UECC. The LNG bunkering operations were conducted at the same time that the cargo operations for the carriers were taking place.

World’s first class electronic certificates to be launched

ClassNK said that it will commence operation of the world’s first comprehensive electronic certificate service for classification and statutory certificates, starting from 15 June 2017. The service, ClassNK e-Certificate, will first be made available to Liberian-flagged vessels on the ClassNK register exclusively.

First cruise ship to be supplied with LNG in Mediterranean

AIDAperla reached the port of Barcelona via the western Mediterranean, on June 7, as part of its “Welcome Cruises”, to support Barcelona’s environmental efforts. Before summer, the ship is going to be supplied with low-emission liquefied natural gas, while she is docked in the port, to reduce its emissions.

First logistics provider to disclose CO2 emissions

Kuehne + Nagel logistics announced that it has expanded sustainability in its global seafreight services, as it is going to print, on each invoice, the total amount of CO2 emissions generated by seafreight shipments, starting from May 2017. In this way, it aims to assist shippers to identify their carbon footprint from transport operations.

DNV GL verifies first company for EU MRV monitoring plans

Arcadia Shipmanagement became the first company to receive verification from classification society DNV GL, for compliant monitoring plans for their whole fleet, under the new EU MRV regulation. The company was presented with a certificate recognizing the achievement at DNV GL’s Piraeus office.
