World’s first digital Arctic-logistics management system launched

Gazprom Neft, part of Russian oil and gas company Gazprom, announced launch of the world’s first ever digital Arctic-logistics management system, aiming to ensure uninterrupted year-round shipments of crude produced and to improve efficiency in logistics management.

World’s first LNG icebreaker refuels in Finland

IB Polaris is the first icebreaker in the world to use an LNG engine and has bunkered  LNG at the Tornio LNG terminal in Röyttä Harbour. Polaris joined the fleet of Finland’s icebreaker operator Arctia in September 2016. Except the use of LNG, the lubricant used in the vessel’s propulsion system is biodegradable. The ship’s gray water, which basically consists of showering water, is collected to a container which is emptied during port calls. 

World’s first icebreaker condensate tanker ends voyage through Arctic route

‘Boris Sokolov’, the 214 meter long tanker on January 25 arrived in Murmansk after a 6-week voyage from Nansha, China. The vessel was accompanied by the new LNG carrier ‘Boris Davydov’, which was constructed at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) yard in South Korea. Aker Arctic, the Finnish ship design company, reported that the ‘Boris Sokolov’ will be used to transmit gas condensate from Sabetta LNG terminal to European and Asian customers. Also, it could be used as a regular oil tanker.

Finland’s President calls for a first ever ‘Arctic Summit’

In his address to the Finnish Climate Summit in Helsinki in mid-June, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö called on the Arctic Council to have ‘a first ever Arctic Summit’ in order to tackle black carbon emissions in the polar region, noting that there is no time to wait on climate change.

First-registered Polar Class 6 vessel launched

Hondius meets Lloyd’s Register demands for ice-strengthened cruise vessels and exceeds the requirements of the Polar Code as adopted by the IMO. The ship is designed for exploratory voyages that provide first-hand contact with the Arctic and Antarctica. The ship is planned to start operations during the summer of 2019.

Finland’s LNG-fueled icebreaker departs in Bothnian Bay

Arctia’s LNG-fueled icebreaker ‘Polaris’ departed the icebreaker base in Helsinki on 30 January 2018, as the Finnish icebreaking season’s third icebreaker. The vessel will first head to Pori Tahkoluoto to refuel LNG and then to provide maritime transport to the Bothnian Bay in the Baltic Sea. 

First icebreaking LNG tanker heads for Northern Sea Route

After loading its cargo at the Snøhvit LNG export terminal in Norway, the first ice-breaking LNG tanker, Christophe de Margerie, is taking the Northern Sea Route to Boryeong in South Korea, where it will deliver a cargo for Total Gas & Power, the company informed.
