Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University (WMU) spoke during the European Shipping Week (ESW) with a keynote address on Gender diversity: Better for People, Better for the Profession, Better for the Industry.

The third WMU International Women’s Conference, Empowering Women in the Maritime Community that took place in April 2019, launched its report presenting the women and their presentations that participated and also focusing on the conclusions drawn and future steps that should be taken to boost women in shipping.

On the sidelines of the Empowering Women in the Maritime Community Conference in early April, the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Government of Canada jointly announced a major research project on the theme 'Empowering Women for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development'.

Implementing gender-responsive policies and promoting role models for women in the maritime were some of the key conclusions reached during the Empowering Women in the Maritime Community Conference at World Maritime University (WMU), in Malmö, Sweden.

The board of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) announced the allocation of a budget fund of USD 10,000 to develop a Women in Ports Mentoring Program designed to attract, empower and retain female talent in the industry.

Remove structural barriers, build good networks and support quality education to ensure no woman, no girl is left behind in the maritime sector, were some of the themes reiterated by maritime leaders, speaking in WMU International Women’s Conference, on 4-5 April in Malmö, Sweden. 

Over 70% of the respondents of MarTID (Maritime Training Insights Database) survey initiative, World Maritime University (WMU) expect an increase in simulators and e-learning in the coming years. In year 2019, traditional classroom teaching, and simulation training are the most popular training methods for operators, while there has been much debate about whether e-learning in maritime industry works or not. Some believe there is no replacement for hands-on training, others believe there is.

ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre and World Maritime University signed a MoU to strengthen the cooperation in increasing the knowledge of the evolving situation of piracy and sea robbery in Asia. The partnership is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.

On the occasion of 'Day of the Seafarer 2018' focusing on wellbeing, the ITF Seafarers’ Trust and the World Maritime University announced a new crew welfare training programme designed to equip maritime professionals with key skills and knowledge to support welfare onboard. 

In its MarTID survey initiative, the World Maritime University deals with maritime training, and especially training simulators. According to the report, the majority uses e-learning  as a training method, such as videos and simulators. Traditional classroom teaching, and simulation training are the most popular training tools for operators.
