Remove structural barriers, build good networks and support quality education to ensure no woman, no girl is left behind in the maritime sector, were some of the themes reiterated by maritime leaders, speaking in WMU International Women’s Conference, on 4-5 April in Malmö, Sweden. 

Over 70% of the respondents of MarTID (Maritime Training Insights Database) survey initiative, World Maritime University (WMU) expect an increase in simulators and e-learning in the coming years. In year 2019, traditional classroom teaching, and simulation training are the most popular training methods for operators, while there has been much debate about whether e-learning in maritime industry works or not. Some believe there is no replacement for hands-on training, others believe there is.

ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre and World Maritime University signed a MoU to strengthen the cooperation in increasing the knowledge of the evolving situation of piracy and sea robbery in Asia. The partnership is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.

On the occasion of 'Day of the Seafarer 2018' focusing on wellbeing, the ITF Seafarers’ Trust and the World Maritime University announced a new crew welfare training programme designed to equip maritime professionals with key skills and knowledge to support welfare onboard. 

In its MarTID survey initiative, the World Maritime University deals with maritime training, and especially training simulators. According to the report, the majority uses e-learning  as a training method, such as videos and simulators. Traditional classroom teaching, and simulation training are the most popular training tools for operators.

The World Maritime University announced publication of the inaugural report from the historic MarTID (Maritime Training Insights Database) survey initiative, intended to study global maritime training practices and investments. The report showed that more operators increased their budget for crew training from 2016 to 2017.

During the World Maritime University’s Kinney Lecture Series, Christopher J. Wiernicki, Chairman, President and CEO of ABS, underlined the fact that the evolution of marine and offshore industries into new operating models is strengthened by groundbreaking changes in technology.  

The World Maritime University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Marine Learning Systems and New Wave Media, on 29 June, establishing a partnership to conduct recurring global surveys on seafarer training practices. These surveys would help to provide insights for the continued development of the STCW Convention.

The World Maritime University and the Korea Maritime and Ocean University signed a Memorandum of Understanding, aiming to promote academic and educational exchanges including exchanges of faculty, researchers and students, as well as collaborative research lectures and conferences in areas of common interest.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has welcomed Sweden’s ongoing support to the World Maritime University in Malmö following a meeting with Ms. Anna Johansson, Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure, during a visit to the renowned postgraduate maritime institute.
