With World Maritime Day being the focus of shipping today, the UK announced the third round of funding for its Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC).

People play a central role in the development of new technologies to help shipping meet its environmental goals and protect the marine environment, say Jamaican maritime leaders.

"New technologies for greener shipping" is this year’s World Maritime Day theme in a bid to reflect some of the most pressing environmental challenges increasingly affecting the future of the world and the maritime industry.

IMO is shining a spotlight on the role of emerging technologies to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future, during the World Maritime Day 2022, on 29 September.

“MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on” has been chosen as the IMO World Maritime Theme for 2023, on 28 September. The theme reflects the organization's long history of protecting the environment from the impact of shipping via a robust regulatory framework and emphasizes its ongoing commitment to this important work.

Seafarer voices were front and centre on IMO's World Maritime Day, with an all-seafarer panel discussing a number of issues relating to this year's theme.

Currently, there are about 100,000 seafarers stranded at sea beyond their regular stints of typically 3-9 months, according to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). Many of them do not even have a day's break on land, while another 100,000 are stuck on shore, unable to board the ships. This year's World Maritime Day focuses on the struggles that seafarers face today and provides a message of support.

Stella Maris emphasised the need to 'get back to basics' in crew welfare provision in a World Maritime Day message for 2021.

Celebrating the World Maritime Day, New Zealand says that focussing on seafarers is even more important given the current global context.
