Creating a positive and inclusive work environment is crucial for the overall well-being and productivity of the entire team onboard. By fostering respect, open communication, and equal opportunities, male seafarers can contribute to a supportive atmosphere that boosts morale and enhances the overall performance of their women colleagues. 

Dewi Wesselman, Group Sustainability Coordinator at Damen Shipyards Group, advises ship managers and operators to favour leasing vessels over selling them. By performing green refits in this way, they could increase the lifespan of the ships and maintain their high value  through maintenance and repair.

Women seafarers make up just 2% of the crewing workforce and are predominately found in the cruise sector, while in ship-owning companies, they make up 34% of the workforce. Women may be less but that doesn’t mean they should be less-than. As the maritime industry strives to be more diverse and inclusive, women should not be left out, a panel during the 2023 Crew Welfare Week highlighted.

Emilie Christiansen, Senior Shipping Lawyer in the Norwegian law firm Thommessen, highlights that more women in management positions not only enhance diversity in shipping but also provide good roles models to attract and retain the younger generation.

Margaux Moore, Head of Energy Transition Research and Venture Investment for Trafigura, mentions that shipping will represent a large demand for low carbon fuels as the industry decarbonizes and she is excited to be part of the entire lifecycle – from incubation to deployment.
