Maritime subjects are set to be included on a new Leadership in the Public Sector course being developed by the training arm of the UN system, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. This was decided during a UNITAR meeting at IMO Headquarters, London, where a task force, including IMO, was created to develop the course.

Nicole Langosch has been appointed as captain in the vessel AIDAsol. As a result she became the first woman in the position of captain in the AIDA fleet. Currently, AIDA Cruises employs 14 female nautical officers aboard its fleet.

Central and Latin America celebrated the launch of a new maritime network for women which joins the IMO family of regional Women in Maritime Associations (WIMAs), giving visibility and recognition to the role women play as key resources for the maritime sector.

IMO announced that its technical cooperation activities have received a boost of $1.0 million by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The funds will be allocated to activities like training and supporting women in the maritime sector, combating piracy and other illicit activities that threaten the safety of navigation.

The participation of the Saudi Arabian women delegation at the Regional Conference for Arab Women in the Maritime Sector‎ shed light on the practical steps taken by Saudi Arabia to achieve the ambitious Vision 2030, which envisages increasing the participation of women in the workforce from the present 22% to 30%.

A regional conference on women in the maritime sector took place in Dili, Timor Leste, on 6-9 November, under the theme: Transitioning from Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals. The event gathers members of the Women in Maritime Associations for Asia from 22 Asian countries.
