Shipping is one of the most heavily male-dominated industries in the world. There is a long way to go before anything like gender parity can be achieved in this sector, but employers are starting to wake up to the need for change, and Nautilus International says is in the vanguard. Thus, the union supports the International Women’s Day #BeBoldForChange theme.

No matter their achievements in the maritime sector, women make up only an estimated 2% of the world’s maritime workforce and that’s mainly the aftereffect of a potential discrimination or harassment that they face when getting into seafaring work. IMO together with other maritime organizations have contributed to empower women in the shipping. But, why shipping needs more women and why are they refraining from entering the industry?

The Master of an oil tanker who says she was “just doing her job” has received the highest IMO bravery recognition for saving the lives of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat during a tumultuous storm in the Bay of Bengal in June 2015.

Captain Radhika Menon, Master of the oil products tanker Sampurna Swarajya, is to receive the 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for her role in the dramatic rescue of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat in tumultuous seas.

IMO Secretary General pushed for the increased involvement of women in the seafaring industry saying during his speech for the Day of the Seafarers at the SM Convention Center in Pasay City, that women are ''the key to the growth of the industry''.

On the occasion of the 2016 International Women’s day, CMA CGM reaffirmed its commitment to promote professional equality, in France and across the 160 countries where the Group is present.
