The British Ports Association welcomed the first meeting of its new Women in Maritime Taskforce, established to address fairness, equality and inclusion within the maritime sector. UK Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani MP attended the first meeting and encouraged the sector to both challenge and support the Government on this initiative.

The India-based Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre, ISWAN, and WISTA have released a new booklet on building and maintaining gender diversity onboard merchant ships, addressing critical social, cultural and interpersonal issues that can affect productivity of seafarers.

The Taskforce aims to bring together leaders from the maritime sector to identify solutions to increase the number of women in maritime, and within senior roles across its shipping, ports, marine and business services industries.

Central and Latin America celebrated the launch of a new maritime network for women which joins the IMO family of regional Women in Maritime Associations (WIMAs), giving visibility and recognition to the role women play as key resources for the maritime sector.

IMO announced that its technical cooperation activities have received a boost of $1.0 million by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The funds will be allocated to activities like training and supporting women in the maritime sector, combating piracy and other illicit activities that threaten the safety of navigation.

The participation of the Saudi Arabian women delegation at the Regional Conference for Arab Women in the Maritime Sector‎ shed light on the practical steps taken by Saudi Arabia to achieve the ambitious Vision 2030, which envisages increasing the participation of women in the workforce from the present 22% to 30%.

A regional conference on women in the maritime sector took place in Dili, Timor Leste, on 6-9 November, under the theme: Transitioning from Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals. The event gathers members of the Women in Maritime Associations for Asia from 22 Asian countries.

Ms. Katerina Stathopoulou, Member of the WISTA International Executive Committee, advises how to ensure a long term career in shipping and talks about WISTA’s efforts to achieve gender balance in shipping, which by nature is a male –dominated industry. Ms Stathopoulou refers to WISTA’s powerful collaborations with big Associations, confirming that the organisation continues action towards women’s empowerment in the maritime community.

An event took place in Alexandria, Egypt, on 15-19 October, where 30 women from nine Arab countries officially launched The Arab Association for Women in the Maritime Sector.
