At the annual IMO Awards ceremony, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim presented the International Maritime Prize for 2017 to Mrs. Birgit Sølling Olsen, former Deputy Director-General of the Danish Maritime Authority, on Thursday, 6 December.

Human rights at sea gains significant attention of the maritime community. Due to its diversified identity, shipping constitutes a friendly field for human rights abuses, with human trafficking, illegal migration, slavery and abuse in fishing sector and even the unsafe working conditions in many Southeast Asian ship recycling facilities being among the key areas of concern.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced that its Global Executive Committee has appointed Kelly Craighead as President and Chief Executive Officer as from 1 January 2019. Mrs. Craighead will be taking over the role currently held by Cindy D'Aoust, who in July of this year announced her intent to leave her position by year’s end.

Celebrity Cruises' newest ship 'Celebrity Edge' was named by the Pakistani activist and youngest Nobel Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, in a ceremony held Tuesday in Florida. Celebrity Edge is the company's first new ship in six years and first new ship series in more than a decade. The ship's highlight is that it has set a landmark with the major involvement of women in its development and manning.

By the second quarter of 2018, the number of women working in senior departmental managers at Manzanillo International Terminal Panama (MIT) reached 41%. They work in yard operations, security and protection, gate operations and docker dispatch.

Ms. Quah Ley Hoon will be appointed as the Chief Executive of the MPA Singapore, as from 1 January 2019. She holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Pantheon-Sorbonne in France, as well as a Master of Business Administration from the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland. 

A sideline WOMESA event on the occasion of the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, on 26-28 November, focused on the integration of women in the maritime sector, comprising participants from 10 African countries supported by IMO and conference attendees.

Sadan Kaptanoglu will become BIMCO's first woman President in June 2019. Ms. Kaptanoglu supports the Women in Maritime initiative to attract more women in the sector. However, the economic, regulatory and environmental challenges will remain at the centre of her agenda.

Through its Women in Maritime programme, IMO is hosting a two-week training course for female officials from maritime and port authorities of developing countries in Le Havre, France. A total of 27 female officials from 18 developing countries are participating, to enhance their knowledge in port management and operational efficiency.
