After noticing a lack of opportunities for women to network with others during industry events, Sarah Louise Howell, Marketing Communications Manager, ExxonMobil LNG and Tracy Lothian, Senior Vice President, Rovuma LNG Marketing, came together to discuss what ExxonMobil could do differently. The end result was the Power Play initiative, which aims to change the way people view diversity in the industry.

Our special column asked from the winners of the first CAREER4SEA – EUROPORT Awards, which were announced in early November on the sidelines of EUROPORT, to suggest ways in order to support gender diversity in shipping and give motives to younger generations for investing in a career in the industry. 

Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, President of WISTA International and CEO of TOTOTHEO MARITIME, a leading global supplier of advanced maritime technology and services, spoke to Nor-Shipping, after being elected to a second two-year term as WISTA International President, arguing that the changing world, defined by changing technology, demands a changing maritime workforce.

WISTA Hellas conducted its Annual Forum on November 5, focusing on the sanctions that are being imposed today, the development of digitalization, as well as the role of women in shipping and the importance of boosting their presence in the sector. 

The US Coast Guard, in celebration of women in shipping, launched a special edition of its "Proceedings" series, featuring the contributions of women in the US maritime, highlighting the importance of gender equality.

During the IMO's 31st Assembly session, shipping stakeholders gathered to discuss about the path towards the 2020 sulphur cap, with the Secretary General's, Kitack Lim, opening speech calling for concrete action to tackle climate change.

IMO is providing support to eight female officials from developing countries to attend a Port Senior Management Programme which took place from 6 to 19 November at the Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI) in Nahalal, Israel. The event in particular was delivered through IMO's gender and capacity-building programme, together with GIMI, as part of IMO's efforts to support the UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

In efforts of improving the gender gap in the shipping industry, Celebrity Cruises announced an industry’s first; Sailing with an entirely female bridge and officer team. This comes in line with the company’s plan on boosting female presence in the cruise industry, given that it still is a male-dominant sector.

In order to boost women's leadership in the maritime and ocean business community, the World's Ocean Council (WOC) and the Women's International Shipping & Tradding Association (WISTA) are about to collaborate and sign an MoU, on 20 November at the annual WOC Sustainable Ocean Summit 2019 in Paris.

During IMO's training courses at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Rabat, Morocco, in 13-15 of November, African women who work in search and rescue (SAR) operations, had the chance to be trained and extend their skills in order to face SAR missions.
