VPLP launches vessel equipped with four “oceanwings”

VPLP designed a 121-metre-long RORO vessel for transporting components of the Ariane 6 rocket from Europe to French Guiana, equipped with four Oceanwings®, which make the vessel have as less as possible impact on the environment.

Wind energy system receives preliminary approval

MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding have jointly obtained ‘Approval In Principle (AIP)’ from ClassNK for the design of a hard sail system. The system converts wind energy to propulsive force with telescopic hard sail. As MOL said, the system is crucial for the ‘Wind Challenger Project’, which MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding are leading.

New eco-tanker design eyes rotor sail with VOC compounds and LNG

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has received an approval in principle for a VLCC ‘eco-tanker’ design, capable of using a combination of volatile organic compounds (VOC) mixed with LNG as fuel and Norsepower’s rotor sail solution for wind-assisted propulsion.

Tests from Rotor Sail technology on Viking Grace indicate savings

Norsepower Oy Ltd. announced that independent test results showed that Norsepower’s Rotor Sail technology has the potential to deliver savings on the Viking Line-owned and operated M/S Viking Grace. Long term LNG marine fuel savings is expected to be up to about 300 tonnes on annual basis.

Joint Industry Project to tackle wind turbine blade erosion

DNV GL launched a Joint Industry Project with ten commercial partners to develop a Comprehensive methodology for Blade Rain erosion Analysis (COBRA). The project aspires to get an insight into the damage caused to leading edge wind turbine blades from the high-speed impacts of foreign objects, such as raindrops, and identify how best to develop protection systems.
