Effective from 1st July, the New Zealand government has updated its Maritime Transport Act 1994 to allow maritime levies to fund seafarer welfare services for the purposes of the MLC. 

On the occasion of this year’s Day of the Seafarer on June 25th, our special column is dedicated to all seafarers who currently face unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic. Industry stakeholders appreciate their efforts and they have been in talks for improving their lives onboard. In that regard, we have asked many experts to provide feedback on improving crew welfare.

As part of activities in support of Day of the Seafarer June 25, 2021, Maritime Authority of Jamaica conducted a survey focusing on Jamaican seafarers.

Crew welfare is a key issue; it concerns people onboard. Without crew, ships would not sail and the world would stop; It is known that shipping is responsible for transporting more than 90% of our goods and energy. Crew is the backbone of shipping; therefore, we need to make sure that crew welfare is on top of mind to all of us, experts of the Industry Panel during the 2021 Crew Welfare Week agreed.

During the Crew Welfare Week, a unique industry event taking place 22-25 June 2021, the ship managers panel discussed about the next steps on crew change issue as well as key challenges and opportunities out of the pandemic for the maritime industry.

The Crew Welfare Week focuses on the vital role that seafarers play for a safer and sustainable shipping as well as the whole trade and economy, highlighting ways to improve their crew welfare considering that the pandemic has added new challenges in their work and daily life onboard.

Seafarer welfare charity The Mission to Seafarers announced the launch of its new Onboard Mental Health Champions webinars and podcast series, as part of its WeCare programme, aiming to address the unique challenges they face onboard.

It has been over a year since the world was introduced to lockdown measures as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic.
