Do you sometimes feel that you need to step back from your daily tasks and just take time to do nothing at all, without any specific purpose or goal? Here comes the act of ‘Niksen’, the Dutch term for doing absolutely nothing.

In its Q4 2023 Seafarers Happiness Index report, the Mission to Seafarers noted that the percentage of happiness about seafarers’ interaction with crew on board, has fallen to 6.97/10 from 7.42/10.

Research has underscored the significance of addressing not only the physical aspects but also the psychological repercussions of an injury to achieve best outcome.

During the 2023 SAFETY4SEA Manila Forum, Dr. Christian Angelo P. Lubaton, Medical Director for Holistic Care presented a study by Nordic Medical Clinic between 2018 and 2022, with a participation of 11,831 seafarers. Results revealed a significant proportion of seafarers having higher risk classifications. It also showed that higher risk classes take a longer time to be fit to work.

The Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB) and the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), published "The Delivering on Seafarers’ Rights 2023 Progress Report", which presents how the situation has changed in the past twelve months and how the Code of Conduct has assisted companies in their due diligence work.

The results of the latest Seafarers Happiness Index show a further drop in seafarer happiness for the fourth quarter of 2023, raising serious concerns over conditions for all those working at sea. 

The 2023/2024 Shipping Industry Flag State Performance, published by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), indicates continuing positive performance by the vast majority of Flag States which are responsible for the safety and environmental performance of the world’s merchant ships.
