During the 2023 Crew Welfare Week, Mr. Ronald Spithout, Managing Director, OneHealth by VIKAND, challenged the industry to rethink its human wellness strategy and consider a Crew Asset Management approach.

In its Q2 2023 Seafarers Happiness Index report, the Mission to Seafarers noted that the percentage of happiness about seafarers’ ability to keep fit and healthy on board, has fallen to 6.9 from 7.1

During a discussion on the second day of the 2023 Crew Welfare Week, ship managers focused on the key challenges related to seafarers’ wellbeing and highlighted the impact of technology and digitalization in shipping industry.

Social interaction is important for seafarers onboard their vessels as it supports their psychological well-being, promotes crew cohesion and teamwork, reduces stress, facilitates knowledge exchange, and fosters cultural and social adaptation.

The Mission to Seafarers published the findings of its Q2 2023 Seafarers Happiness Index report. The data from Q2 2023 show a significant drop in overall happiness to 6.77/10, down from 7.1/10 in Quarter 1.

Being far from home, away from people you care about, dealing with tough conditions and strict regulations; this is what it is to be a seafarer. But first, seafarers are people.

The SAFETY4SEA Crew Welfare Week took place 20-22 June 2023, where various presentations and panel discussions explored issued surrounding crew welfare. Mental health and welfare were also discussed as it is a crucial aspect of a person's wellbeing. 

During a discussion on the first day of the 2023 Crew Welfare Week, panelists focused on the challenges related to seafarers’ welfare and wellbeing and highlighted that ship managers and operators need to keep promoting efforts targeting both the physical and the mental health of crew onboard.

Penelope Robotis, Clinical  Psychologist- Psychotherapist, IMEQ, highlights the importance of establishing boundaries in all areas of our lives and balancing the demands of everyday life by creating routines and engaging in acceptance.
