Australian's Pilbara Ports Authority has cleared major Port of Rio Tinto as part of cyclone operations. The Authority addressed that ports of Ashburton, Dampier and Port Hedland were under preparations for tropical cyclone 'Riley', which was offshore of northern Western Australia.

The World Meteorological Organization called IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee to reintroduce the request for the recruitment of ships to provide ship-based marine meteorological and oceanographic observations. These reports provide real-time feedback on ocean weather conditions to weather forecasters.

Following predictions ahead hurricane season in May, NOAA now informed that conditions in the ocean and the atmosphere are conspiring to produce a less active Atlantic hurricane season than initially predicted. However NOAA and FEMA are still raising caution as the season enters its peak months.

The heat was hard to beat around the US last month, making it the 11th warmest July on record. Meanwhile, the sweltering temperatures the last three months brought the warmest May through July on record, according to scientists at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

In April 2018, the US NAVOCEANO became the first governmental entity to have simultaneously commanded 50 ocean gliders, unmanned underwater vehicles used to collect data that is incorporated into ocean models, ultimately providing underwater forecasts for US Navy operations. 

The US Department of Energy announced $15 million in funding for 27 projects in atmospheric and ecological sciences, in an effort to improve the ability of Earth system models to predict weather and climate. The projects cover a wide range of topics in atmospheric and terrestrial ecosystem studies.

NASA exercised options according to the Rapid Spacecraft Acquisition III contract for two Joint Polar Satellite System. JPSS satellites will collect global, multi-spectral radiometry and other specialized meteorological, oceanographic data through remote sensing of land, sea and atmospheric properties.

MeteoGroup, the global weather authority, launched a new version of its weather routing solution SPOS. The new version enables captains to safely navigate the globe with low fuel consumption and emissions, by calculating the best routes and anticipate weather. SPOS9 aims to optimize shipping routes by considering various sea conditions.

Together with AIS position and other information, the Tidetech data is integrated into NAPA’s Fleet Intelligence and Class-NK NAPA Green Monitoring programs, which use proprietary algorithms to provide a view of global performance and ship-specific performance analysis.

NOAA launched a decision support tool for super-sized ships, coming through the recently-expanded Panama Canal, to enter the Miami seaport more safely. The tool reduces accidents by more than 50%, increases the amount of cargo ships can carry, reduces transit delays for commercial traffic, enhances recreational activities, and improves hazardous spill response.
