Wartsila to retrofit two UK ferries with its new AQUARIUS READY BMWS

The Wärtsilä AQUARIUS READY solution is a phased process that enables cost savings and installation flexibility for ship owners preparing their vessels for ballast water treatment regulatory compliance. Two Ro-Ro ferries owned by UK based Condor Ferries are to be retrofitted with Wärtsilä's new AQUARIUS READY ballast water management system (BWMS) solution. The AQUARIUS READY concept has been developed by Wärtsilä to prepare vessels for the fitting of BWMS, while minimising vessel downtime, thereby enabling more efficient operations. The contract was signed in February 2014 and the final equipment delivery will take place within 12 months from the ratification of the IMO Ballast Water Convention. Preparation work has already been undertaken onboard the ferries. This includes making the required connections to the main ballast line, installing the bypass and isolating valves, preparing the space needed, and carrying out the foundation work. These tasks were carried out when the vessels were dry-docked. The actual equipment installation and commissioning will take place at a time convenient to the owners following ratification of the IMO Convention. Wärtsilä has the marine and oil & gas industries' most comprehensive offering of products, solutions, integrated systems, and services. Its AQUARIUS READY solution is a phased installation ...

Wartsila to focus on sustainable shipping on Asia Pacific Maritime 2014

Throughout the three days at the Asia Pacific Maritime (APM) show in Singapore from 19-21 March 2014, visitors to Wärtsilä's stand will be treated to presentations and networking discussions on how Wärtsilä products and solutions can meet challenges facing the region's maritime community. Wärtsilä experts will present solutions to address the growing interest in sustainable and "Green Shipping", where owners, operators and the industry in general are looking at solutions and technologies that support efficient and environmentally sound shipping practices. Dr Joe Thomas, head of Wärtsilä's Ballast Water Management Systems unit with responsibility for the development, marketing and sales of the Wärtsilä AQUARIUS UV and EC products, will present at both the Wärtsilä stand and at the APM conference on 21 March about systems to meet current and future ballast water legislative requirements. Dr Thomas will also describe how companies can partner with Wärtsilä for maximum efficiencies on their ballast water installations and operation. Wärtsilä's Ballast Water Management System have gained some of the highest-level industry certifications, including completion of verification testing for explosion proof (EX) requirements for its AQUARIUS UV system, as well as IMO type approval and the USCG Alternate Management System (AMS) acceptance. Wärtsilä Ship Design Singapore ...

Wartsila environmental seal systems allow mineral oil to be used in US waters

Wärtsilä announced that its Wärtsilä Airguard and Wärtsilä Oceanguard propeller shaft sealing systems can continue to utilise mineral oil since they meet the guidelines set out in the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2013 revised Vessel General Permit. The guidelines came into force in December 2013 and the position of the Environmental Protection Agency was published in a webinar organised by the EPA on 14 February 2014. This means that the Wärtsilä Airguard and Wärtsilä Oceanguard seals meet the defined regulatory prerequisites and that owners and operators of commercial vessels of over 79ft (24 metres), sailing within US waters with either of these Wärtsilä systems installed, are not required to change to an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL). With the Wärtsilä Airguard and Wärtsilä Oceanguard propeller shaft sealing systems there is no oil-to-sea interface. An air chamber or separation space within the seal captures any water or oil leakage, which is then transferred to inboard tanks for monitoring and further treatment. This completely eliminates oil drips or leakage into the sea. The EPA requires these designs to be functioning normally, which can be assured by proper operation and maintenance according to Wärtsilä's guidelines. In case of system failure, both systems also ...
