LNG fuelled icebreaker to be powered by Wartsila

A new icebreaker being built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard for the Finnish Transport Agency will be powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines capable of operating on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low sulphur diesel fuel. Wärtsilä's industry leading track record in dual-fuel engine technology was a crucial factor in the award of the contract. By enabling LNG to be used as the engine fuel, both exhaust emissions and fuel costs are notably reduced. The impressive power output per cylinder of the Wärtsilä engines was also cited as a factor in the contract award decision. The full scope of supply calls for one 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20DF, two 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF, and two 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF engines. The contract was signed in March 2014, and delivery of the equipment to the yard will be made in spring 2015. New propeller design introduced by Wartsila for fuel savings

The FPP Opti Design, a new fixed pitch propeller (FPP) design concept, has been introduced by Wärtsilä at the Posidonia 2014 exhibition in Athens, Greece. The new design offers fuel savings of up to 4 per cent and highly reliable full scale performance predictions. The concept has been developed utilising the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The Wärtsilä FPP Opti Design has been developed at the company's Technology and Service Centre in the Netherlands, and is the result of experienced design engineers having access to the very latest and most sophisticated software and analysis tools. CFD calculations analyse not only the propeller performance but most importantly also, the interaction between the propeller and hull. New Aframax tanker design launched by Wartsila at Posidonia 2014

A new, highly efficient, Aframax tanker design offering practical and viable solutions that meet current and forthcoming emissions legislation is launched by Wärtsilä at the Posidonia 2014 exhibition in Athens, Greece. Wärtsilä will also be featuring its range of merchant ship designs to provide owners with tailored designs based specifically on their intended operating profiles. Wärtsilä Ship Design also offers shipyards a solution based approach with integration packages and full support throughout the planning and execution phases. The new Aframax design emphasises energy efficiency to provide lower operating costs and enhanced environmental performance. It features an optimised hull form to minimize resistance, and an optimised propulsion train with energy saving devices (ESDs) for greater efficiency. Fuel savings have been the primary focus during the development of this design, and significant testing of the hull lines by both CFD and tank testing have successfully produced a highly competitive design. Wärtsilä offers the Aframax design in three, fit-for-purpose versions; the Basic configuration using conventional HFO fuel, Environmental with the exhaust emissions cleaned using a scrubber and selective catalyst reduction (SCR), and the Green version based on dual-fuel engines using LNG. Two HB Grandi fishing vessels to be fitted with Wartsila NOx Reducer

The new Wärtsilä NOx Reducer will be fitted to two new fishing vessels under construction at the Celiktrans yard in Turkey. The ships are owned by HB Grandi, one of Iceland's fishing vessel operators. The order was received during the fourth quarter of 2013 and Wärtsilä's equipment is scheduled for delivery in the second and fourth quarter of 2014. The upgraded version of Wärtsilä NOx Reducer features a flexible and more compact design to enable easier and faster onboard installation. It is also compatible for both marine diesel fuel (MDF) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) engine operation. The auxiliary units have also been improved; for example, centralised units for multiple installations with built-in redundancy are now available. Wartsila receives repeat order from Evergas

Three new 27,000 cbm LNG/Multigas Carriers for Evergas, the Denmark based transporter of petrochemical gases and natural gas liquids, are to be built featuring the integrated Wärtsilä solution, comprising the main propulsion equipment, the gas fuel supply system, and the cargo handling system. This order is an extension of the one placed in 2013 for a series of three similar vessels. The ships are being built by the Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) shipyard in China, and feature an advanced design that offers very high efficiency and unparalleled flexibility.
