Mitsui wins diesel engine order from Crowley ConRo

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) has received the first order of electronically controlled gas injection diesel engine (hereinafter, ME-GI) for MES. MAN B&W 8S70ME-C8.2-GI will be installed on 2 x 2,400 TEU + 400 vehicles ConRo ships to be built by VT Halter Marine Inc. (U.S. shipyard) for Crowley Maritime Corporation (U.S. owner). ME-GI is Diesel cycle dual fuel engine with high efficiency based on the principle of 2 stroke low speed diesel engine and it can use both heavy oil and natural gas as fuel depending on relative price and availability, as well as environmental considerations. On existing 4 stroke dual fuel engines, many troubles are seen on the gas combustion system such as knocking or misfire often linked with load fluctuations, resulting in the limitation of gas operation output due to the nature of Otto cycle principle. On the other hand, ME-GI has no difficulty in application for the direct connection to propeller shaft, which is the most efficient way of power transmission. Natural gas can contribute for significant reduction not only in CO2 emissions, SOx, PM emissions and NOx, but also in fuel cost by shale gas development, therefore it can be an alternative fuel selection for ship ...

Wartsila and CSSC co-operate in 2-stroke engine business

Wärtsilä and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture, which will take over Wärtsilä's 2-stroke engine business. Through the agreement, CSSC will own 70% of the business through its affiliate CSSC Investment and Development Co. Ltd, while Wärtsilä will hold a 30% ownership position. The parties will co-operate in 2-stroke engine technology, marketing, sales, and service activities. The parties have agreed to transfer CSSC's whole position as shareholder to a joint venture established by an entity connected with the Municipal Government of Shanghai and CSSC. Responsibility for servicing Wärtsilä's 2-stroke engines will remain with Wärtsilä Services through its global network to support customers in a more dedicated and efficient way. The joint venture parties will support Wärtsilä Services by providing global ship owners with complete solutions of advanced 2-stroke technologies. The value of the transaction is approximately EUR 46 million. The financial impact of the deal will be dependent on the timing of the closing and certain related mechanisms. The deal will have a positive effect on Wärtsilä's continuing operations. The closing of the transaction is subject to the required regulatory approvals, which are expected during the first quarter of 2015. The joint ...

Wartsila signs technical agreements in Greece

Wärtsilä has signed Technical Management Agreements with four Greek liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship owners, Maran Gas Maritime Inc, Dynagas Ltd, TMS Cardiff Gas Ltd and Thenamaris LNG Inc. All agreements cover Condition Based Maintenance for a total of 80 Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines for a five year period. The agreements have been signed between the third quarter of 2013 and the second quarter of 2014. Technical Management Agreements include a Condition Based Maintenance system that brings flexibility to operations as maintenance intervals are optimised. The system enables feeding engine parameters into Wärtsilä's database, and the parameters are then evaluated by specialists at the Condition Based Monitoring centre. Condition Based Maintenance enables early detection of performance issues, reduced downtime, optimised engine performance, predictable cash flow, and optimization of major overhauls. Due to constant monitoring, maintenance is predictive and based on the actual condition of the engine, thus bringing a significant opportunity to reduce operating costs. The agreements with TMS Cardiff Gas Ltd and Thenamaris LNG Inc. also include Online Remote Support, which means that Wärtsilä's technical experts can support the LNG carrier's crew in real time via an online PC connection without the need for engineers to travel to the ...

Wartsila to supply gensets for two new offshore vessels

Wärtsilä has received an order to deliver generating sets for two new well intervention vessels for Siem Offshore A/S from Norway. The vessels are built by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) in Flensburg, Germany. The order was signed in the end of May 2014. Well intervention vessels are used in the maintenance of offshore oil wells to secure the oil flow and availability of the well. Dynamic positioning (DP) of the vessels is, therefore, crucial to their successful operation and it is critically important that the energy supply to the DP system is reliable and efficient. Eight 6-cylinder in-line Wärtsilä 32 generating sets were chosen for each of these ships based upon the customer's requirements for best availability, reliability, and economic fuel consumption. Each genset will be fitted with an SCR catalyst to clean the exhaust and NOx emissions so as to comply with the IMO's Tier III environmental regulations. Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment will commence in May 2015. "Wärtsilä has a long and successful track record in working together with both FSG and Siem Offshore and we are again honoured to have been selected to supply solutions that are critical to the successful operations of these vessels. The Wärtsilä 32 ...

Prestige Cruise adds to Wartsila maintenance agreement

Two vessels have been added to the five-year maintenance agreement that was signed between Wärtsilä and US-based Prestige Cruise Holdings (Prestige), the parent company of Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The agreement now covers eight vessels with a total of 35 Wärtsilä engines. The tailor-made agreement that was signed in 2012 with Prestige is one of the most comprehensive yet for the cruise industry. The depth and scope of the agreement covers pro-active planning by both companies working in co-operation. It also involves dedicated teams from both parties, which will work closely together to ensure maximized lifetime, reduced operational costs and optimal performance of the Prestige fleet. The broad scope of services that are provided under this agreement include maintenance planning, technical surveys, condition monitoring, spare parts supply, training and workshop services. This agreement ensures the certainty of Prestige's operations by transferring the responsibility for their vessels' maintenance to Wärtsilä. It also increases Prestige's financial predictability by covering maintenance planning and service with fixed prices. "We have been very satisfied with our cooperation with Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä has displayed their ability to deliver the value that they promised in the agreement, providing us the peace of mind through risk ...

Wartsila environmental seal systems receives LR recognition

Wärtsilä has received an important service level recognition for its Wärtsilä Airguard and Wärtsilä Oceanguard propeller shaft sealing systems from Lloyd's Register. The recognition of Lloyd's Register, a marine classification society, confirms that the sealing systems meet the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) requirements. Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions and services provider and a pioneer in environmentally sustainable sealing solutions, is the first company in the industry to gain this recognition from Lloyd's Register. In March 2014, Wärtsilä announced that its Wärtsilä Airguard and Wärtsilä Oceanguard seal products can continue to utilise mineral oil since they meet the guidelines set out in the US Environmental Protection Agency's 2013 revised Vessel General Permit. As the Wärtsilä Airguard and Wärtsilä Oceanguard seals meet the defined regulatory prerequisites, owners and operators of commercial vessels of over 79ft (24 metres), sailing within US waters with either of these systems installed are not required to change to an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL). The Lloyds' Register's service level recognition, received on 22 May 2014, confirms that Wärtsilä's Airguard and Oceanguard are well suited for their intended purpose and meet the US Environmental Protection Agency's 2013 revised Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements of Part 2.2.9 under ...
