General Dynamics European Land Systems-Bridge Systems will develop a multifunctional, modular floating platform known as Pontoon Boat (PoBo). PoBo is a modularly configurable floating device, that can be used to assemble heavy-duty transport, working, diving and recovery platforms or bridges. The PoBo will be ergonomically friendly and will have a mobile virtual reality system to carry out fast and cost-effective training.

Newcastle College’s Energy Academy in Wallsend installed an Immersive Hybrid Reality offshore wind training facility. This is a virtual reality system to help train future engineers, as it replicates working conditions experienced by wind turbine engineers operating on offshore wind farms.

MOL announced the addition of a new training session on "Snap-back zones" to its mariner safety education program using virtual reality (VR) goggles and VR technology. The tool aims to improve seafarers’ risk perception by enabling them to visualize and virtually experience onboard accidents.

MOL added 2 new training sessions, 'cargo falling from cranes' and 'response to onboard fires', to its mariner safety education tool goggle. This tool uses virtual reality technology to simulate onboard accidents with computer graphics. The VR training system was launched in 2017.

MOL announced the introduction of the Vessel View VR, a virtual reality system that enables virtual ship visits. Vessel View VR provides access to information that until now has been limited in conventional ship visits. The virtual ship visit will be used into the car carrier 'Beluga Ace'.

Southampton Solent University's Warsash Maritime Academy has conducted two studies, WAVE 1.0 and WAVE 2.0 - Working in Augmented and Virtual Environments, aiming to examine the current knowledge relating to the use of virtual reality in maritime education and training. 

Solent University and Rolls-Royce started a collaborative research and development project on Autumn 2016, to support the unmanned and partially autonomous operation of marine vessels. The project ended on Spring 2018 and focused on applying immersive technologies to enable the crew perform typical duties remotely.
