A group of major British businesses and trade bodies gathered on 6 July in Southampton, to ink a new charter aimed at tackling gender diversity in the maritime sector. The parties signed the 'Women in Maritime pledge', a statement of intent to improve fairness, equality and inclusion in the sector.

Tech experts gathered to explain the benefits of digital technology. These experts aim to show how new technologies can be used effectively, while also protecting against unwanted or unexpected negative impacts. The panel will be comprised of women and men of technology, public policy, science, and academia.

The UK Coast Guard has issued kill cord safety advice, after two men were thrown from their speedboat in the afternoon hours of 12 July. The kill cord, as the name suggests, is designed to 'kill' a boat engine, in case the driver goes overboard.

Bangladeshi ship recycling yard PHP Family is ready for demolition of its first vessel in accordance with Hong Kong Convention standards. The shipyard, located in Chittagong, was the first in Bangladesh to win a statement of compliance with the Convention, back in October 2017.

Identifying organisms and microbes in ballast water, as well as monitoring port marine life where ballast water may be released, are key for countries preparing to enforce IMO's Ballast Water Management Convention. A workshop in Batumi, Georgia, from 3 to 5 July provided participants from nine countries with theoretical and practical training in compliance, monitoring and enforcement of the Convention.

On Thursday, the east African state of Djibouti commissioned a $3.5 billion, Chinese-built free trade zone, deepening ties with the Asian giant and helping the Horn of Africa nation generate more jobs. The new trade zone covers 48 square km and was built by China’s Dalian Port Corporation.

At least 34 people have been confirmed dead after the ferry 'KM Lestari Maju' sank off the coast off Bulukumba, South Indonesia, on Tuesday, early afternoon. The ship, carrying 139 people onboard, was heading to Selayar island, but sank about 300 meters from shore due to inclement weather at 2:30 pm.
