The Arctic is considered as one of the most challenging shipping routes. Being open only a few months, few ships have chosen this route for their voyages, worrying about the extreme weather. However, this seems to be changing, as lately more and more ships actually prefer the Northern Sea Route. Today, there is more traffic in this route, as journey times between Asia and Europe can be reduced by up to two weeks.

The cruise ship 'Oasis of the Seas' has suffered an unspecified casualty, a major repair and refit facility for the Caribbean cruise industry.

Malta has traditionally been dependent on diesel and heavy fuel oil for its power generation. On March 24, the LNG carrier Aseem collided with the 280,000 dwt VLCC Shinyo Ocean at the Fujairah anchorage. Shinyo Ocean suffered a huge portside hull-height breach, whereas Aseem suffered severe bow damage. Both of the vessels remain on anchorage after the incident.
