Oil spill in Mississippi after vessel hits pier

The US Coast Guard and local agencies responded to an oil spill near mile marker 100, on the lower Mississippi River, near New Orleans, after the Singapore-flagged vessel ‘Pac Antares’ hit a pier on Thursday morning causing an estimated 4,200 gallons of oil fuel to discharge. 

Global marine heatwaves on the rise, new study reveals

From 1925-2016, the frequency of marine heatwaves had increased on average by 34% and the length of each heatwave had increased by 17%, as a direct result of warming oceans, according to an international study in Nature Communications by ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes and IMAS. 

Two recovered after 27 hours in the water

The US Coast Guard announced it rescued two men, after their boat capsized, southeast of St. George Island, Florida, on Sunday. The two men were hanging onto the side of the capsized vessel and they had been exposed to the elements for approximately 27 hours.

Compliance towards 2020 sulphur cap

During his presentation at the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Juha Kiukas, Sales Director, Trojan Marinex, noted that ballast water testing is expensive and time consuming and consolidation in BWTS market will accelerate. He referred to recent USCG policy letter regarding inoperable systems and clarified that lack of consumables does not meet the ”stops of operating properly” clause and also ships with inoperable BWT system due to BWT system makers bankruptcy and non-availability of spare parts or chemicals will not receive special consideration.

New project eyes robots in the offshore industry

Robots could soon be working autonomously alongside humans on a North Sea platform, as part of a new project from the Oil & Gas Technology Centre, Total and taurob, in partnership with Technische Universitaet Darmstadt. The 18-month project will develop and trial a mobile robot for autonomous operational inspection on Total’s facilities.

New Super Post-Panamax cranes arrive at Port of Philadelphia

PhilaPort and Packer Avenue Marine Terminal’s operator “Astro Holdings”, purchased the cranes as part of Governor Tom Wolf’s $300 million Port Development Plan to increase cargo-handling capacity and efficiency. The new cranes will be able of discharging containers from ULCVs and have a cost of $12m each.

Container ship, bulk carrier collide off Denmark

The container ship ‘Delphis Gdansk’ collided with the general cargo ship ‘BBC Neptune’, in the early hours of 27 March, in Great Belt west of Kalundborg, Denmark, while proceeding in opposite directions. Both ships were significantly damaged, while one of them reportedly sustained fire. ‘Delphis Gdansk’ also lost some containers.
