The four lowest seasonal maximums all happened during the last four years. The reduction of the Arctic sea ice cover has many effects, impacting climate and weather, the marine environment, and indigenous human communities. The reduced ice is also changing shipping routes, increasing coastal erosion and affecting ocean circulation.
Improved energy efficiency in shipping means use of less fuel, leading to less harmful emissions to the environment. In this context, IMO is leading the Global MTCC Network initiative, funded by EU, with Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres built in targeted regions promoting technologies to improve energy efficiency in the maritime.
March 24 marks the 29th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez accident. On this date in 1989, one of the most catastrophic – if not the most catastrophic – oil spills of the 20th century took place. The tanker Exxon Valdez was departing the Port of Valdez, Alaska with a full load of North Slope crude oil, of approximately 1.26 million barrels, destined for Long Beach when it grounded on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound. About 258,000 barrels of cargo were spilled as eight cargo tanks ruptured, causing one of the most shocking environmental disasters in the history of US.

Recently, a milestone was set for Arctic shipping. Namely, the tanker “Eduard Toll” became the first ever ship to sail through the Northern Sea Route during winter, without the help of an icebreaker. Teekay’s “Eduard Toll” started from South Korea in December 2017, heading to the Sabetta LNG terminal in Russia.
The US embassy in Mexico City issued a safety alert, prohibiting all US Government employees from using all tourist ferries on the route Cozumel-Playa del Carmen, Mexico, until further notice, due to two subsequent incidents involving explosive devices onboard, on 21 February and on 1 March.
Fourteen years ago on this day, the Singapore-flagged chemical tanker ‘Bow Mariner’ sank off Virginia after a fire broke out while its crew was engaged in cleaning residual from cargo tank, resulting in the death of 21 people, total loss of the ship, as well as significant marine pollution.
Fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the UK. This hazardous job is made difficult by the 100,000 kilometres of cables and pipelines and 4,000 surface and subsea structures that lie off the coast of the UK and northern Europe. These obstacles are dangerous for fishing vessels, as the compromise fishing gear or lead to collisions.
24 passengers were injured when an explosion took place onboard a ferry in the maritime terminal of Playa del Carmen in Mexico, while the were disembarking. Of the 24, 15 people had minor injuries, including five American visitors, who received medical attention at a private hospital.
