USCG revises Security Advisory regarding ports not maintaining effective anti-terrorism measures

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a revised Port Security Advisory (1-16) in which it determines that the Republic of Cuba is now maintaining effective anti-terrorism measures in their ports. The Republic of Cuba is removed from the list of the Countries Affected in paragraph B of the Port Security Advisory. Therefore, actions required in paragraphs C and D of the Port Security Advisory are no longer required for vessels that arrive in the United States after visiting ports in the Republic of Cuba.

USCG: Factors resulting to loss of electrical power

USCG has issued Safety Alert to address causal factors related to a temporary loss of electrical power that occurred onboard a tow boat with a tow. In this case, electrical power was restored quickly by a standby generator, and the vessel and tow remained under control throughout the event. USCG: Oil Spill Removal Organization Guidelines Update

USCG has issued Bulletin is to announce the update to the Oil Spill Removal Organization (OSRO) Guidelines. The product of a concerted and collaborative effort, the Office of Marine Environmental Response Policy (CG-MER), the National Strike Force Coordination Center (NSFCC), and private/public sector subject matter experts updated these guidelines to address current risks posed by heavy and Group V oils while keeping an eye open for changes on the horizon.

USCG oversees safe transit of damaged vessel Sparna to Port of Kalama

The motor vessel Sparna, a 623-foot Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier briefly ran aground in the Columbia River, on March 21, 2016. The Sparna suffered multiple fractures along its hull after briefly running aground, however, no pollution was reported coming from the damaged areas. A Unified Command consisting of the Coast Guard, operators of the motor vessel Sparna, Columbia River Pilots and the National Response Corporation Environmental Services oversaw the safe transit of the damaged motor vessel Sparna up the Columbia River to the North Kalama, Washington pier.
