The Coast Guard Marine Safety Center received its 25th application for Ballast Water Management System type approval for the HK-(E)C Ballast Water Management System manufactured by Miura Co., Ltd. MSC will review the application for compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations in 46 CFR 162.060. Once it has been determined that the application meets the requirements, the MSC will issue a type approval certificate.

The Coast Guard Marine Safety Center received its 24th application for Ballast Water Management System type approval for the EcoBallast Ballast Water Management System manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. 

The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center received its 23rd application for Ballast Water Management System type approval for the HK-S(E) Ballast Water Management System manufactured by Japanese Miura Co., Ltd. Last week, USCG awarded the 16th type approval certificate to Envirocleanse LLC. 

The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Centre issued the 15th Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System type approval certificate to De Nora Balpure for its BALPURE® ballast water treatment system (BWTS). The BALPURE system has been approved for both safe area and hazardous zone installations for internationally trading vessels including US-Flagged vessels. 

The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Centre issued the 14th Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System type approval certificate to Panasia Co., Ltd., for its GloEn-Patrol BWMS. It also received the 22nd application from Semb-Eco LUV U1 Ballast Water Management System manufactured by Semb-Eco Pte, Ltd. 

On 14 November, the US Senate passed the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) as part of the USCG Reauthorization Act with a vote of 94 to 6, paving the way for the harmonization of state and federal regulations for vessel ballast water discharges in the United States. In the meantime, the move is considered as a means of harmonization of the USCG policy approach with that of IMO. 

The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center received its 21th application for type approval for the Cathelco Evolution Ballast Water Management System manufactured by Cathelco Ltd. During the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Juha Kiukas, Sales Director, Trojan Marinex, noted that the BWMS market is currently becoming more mature and around 20 Type Approvals may be expected up to 2019.

The US Coast Guard recently published a letter to the Coast Guard-accepted independent laboratories (ILs), providing guidance for evaluating manufacturer-identified operational limitations during type approval testing of ballast water management systems (BWMS).

Mr Anders Lindmark, Head of PureBallast, BU Marine Separation and Heat Transfer Equipment, Alfa Laval emphasizes on the importance of planning well before installation of a BWTS considering vessel’s needs. Mr. Lindmark advises operators to plan before and focus on sufficient skilled engineering expertise.

Irish Ardmore Shipping has encountered a series of operational problems on the BWTS that were installed on ten of its vessels in newbuild shipyards. Now the company has ordered the Norwegian BWT manufacturer Optimarin to replace these with 36 new systems across 18 chemical and product tankers.
