Vessel fire results to six casualties in Durban Port

As the South American Maritime Safety Authority reported, six people lost their lives in a fire incident, that took place at the port of Durban. SAMSA is moving forward to an investigation to find out the factors that caused the fire on February 14.

US Navy Cruiser, Navy supply ship collide off of Florida

A US guided-missile cruiser and Navy resupply vessel have collided off the coast of Florida during a training exercise on February 5, according to the US Naval Institute (USNI). From the collision there were no casualties addressed, whereas only minor damage above the waterline to both ships was reported.

USCG member dies in crane accident

As US Coast Guard announced one member of the buoy Hickory died on January 31 when a crane fell over in a buoy yard outside of Homer, Alaska. The victim was identified as Chief Warrant Officer Michael Kozloski, 35, a resident of Mahopac, New York. Kozloski was working in the tender’s storage yard, close to Homer’s Pioneer Dock. 

Watch: Vessels break free of moorings due to heavy rainfall and ice flow

The city of Troy in New York published a video depicting several unmanned boats and vessels pass beneath the Troy-Menands Bridge on the Hudson River. The vessels broke free of their moorings on Friday, January 25, because of heavy rainfall and ice flow on the Hudson River. One of them, a river cruise boat, broke its moorings and drifted downstream, hitting a bridge and wedging itself under another in Albany.

Bulk carrier grounded in Delaware River, USA

The bulk carrier ‘Strategic Explorer’ ran aground on January 21 on Delaware river, which is located in Wilmington USA. The vessel is, for the time being, anchored after its unmooring. The vessel was anchored after its unmooring and placed in Wilmington from January 17. The vessel was refloated with the help of at least two tugs on January 22, at around 06.00 hours (UTC).

USCG proceeds to formal investigation on capsized fishing vessel

The US Coast Guard, announced on January 16, the official marine casualty investigation of the fishing vessel Mary B I, which capsized off Newport, Oregon on January 9. The capsized vessel led to three fishermen loosing their lives, according to the Coast Guard’s statement. 

Vessel grounded at Mississippi River

The US Coast Guard responded to a grounded vessel in the Lower Mississippi River near New Orleans, on Friday, January 4. The UK-flagged Anglo Alexandria had grounded in the Mississippi River at mile marker 3.5. The Mississippi River has reopened after the refloating of the bulk carrier.

Cruise ship hits mooring dolphin at Mallory Square, Key West

The 691-foot-long cruise ship Silver Spirit crashed into a mooring dolphin in Key West, on November 28, due to heavy winds. Because of the crash, Mallory Square will be unusable for three months. The ship was not significantly damaged, while no injuries were reported.

Improper berthing arrangements led to Helsinki Bridge allision

US NTSB published its report on the allision of the container ship ‘Helsinki Bridge’, with the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal on December 6, 2017. According to the report, the Massachusetts Port Authority did not provide proper berthing arrangements during ongoing construction at the Conley Container Terminal.

USCG medevacs Captain from motor vessel

The US Coast Guard medevaced a 49-year-old captain from a motor vessel, approximately eight miles offshore of Galveston, Texas, on December first. According to the crew, the captain was presenting symptoms of heart attack.
