A $67 million waterfront expansion concluded at the Port of Oakland during January. Specifically, the TraPac marine terminal opened its newest vessel berth to arriving container ships. The milestone signals the completion of a 2-year project at Oakland’s second-largest terminal. TraPac started its new era in Oakland in January when the container vessel Bay Bridge tied up at Berth 25.

The volume of inbound containers from China to the US will reduce this February, because of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Namely, Chinese ports will close for three days, while factories and employees will have a one-week holiday. This situation will lead to a longer slowdown in freight markets, while an uncertain trade outlook might affect the freight business.

The Port of Los Angeles moved more cargo in 2018 than any time in its history, racking up 9,458,749 TEUs. This is an increase of 1.2% than 2017’s record-breaking year. It is the third year in a row that the Port achieves record volumes. In December, the Port processed 903,258 TEUs, which constitutes the busiest December.

Port of Oakland container volume achieved an all-time high in 2018. Specifically, the Port handled the equivalent of 2.55 million 20-foot containers last year. An increase of 5.2% from 2017. This was the second year in a row that the Port of Oakland achieves a record volume.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that the first all-electric straddle carrier in the US is coming to the Port of New York and New Jersey by the end of this year. This is part of initiatives to meet goals for greenhouse gas emissions reductions set forth in the Paris Climate Agreement.

The Canaveral Port Authority awarded Merritt Island-based Ivey’s Construction Inc. a $78.98 million contract for the Port’s Cruise Terminal 3 project and a $29.53 million contract for the 1,800-vehicle parking garage. The $38.6 million project is expected to be completed in December.

At the end of 2018, South Carolina Ports Authority reported 6.4% year-over-year container volume growth, with a record 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) handled in the past year. The 2018 marked the third consecutive calendar year of record TEU volume for the Ports Authority.

The US Army Corps of Engineers granted a $92 million construction contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC, to deepen and widen the Corpus Christi Ship Channel from the Gulf of Mexico to Harbor Island, under the Channel Improvement Project.

Port Tampa Bay announced the first direct link to Asia from the Port. Namely, Cosco will add the Port to its Gulf of Mexico Express Transpacific service. The first ship that will arrive in the Port is Cosco Piraeus, on January 28, 2019. The new service will be Shanghai-Ningbo-Xiamen-Yantian-Houston-Mobile-Tampa.

The waterside construction at Port Canaveral’s new Cruise Terminal 3 has started and a new 1,309-foot-long berth will soon take shape with the arrival of the first steel for the bulkhead wall. The project will cost $150 millions, while the marine works will be completed by end of November 2019.
