Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced the completion of the Port of Virginia’s $320 million expansion at the Virginia International Gateway container terminal. The completion of this project is a significant milestone as the Port works to enhance cargo and container capacity at its two major terminals, with a total goal of increasing capacity by 40%.

The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has achieved a record number of container and auto moves during the first three quarters of fiscal year 2019. During this time, JAXPORT moved about one million containers, a 6% increase over the same period last year.

Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total annual throughput of 697.2 million tonnes (Mt) for the 2018/19 financial year. This result constitutes less than 1% change, namely a decrease of 2.06 million tonnes, from last year’s record annual throughput.

ABS and MOL informed that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on up to 14 new gas carriers. The agreement regards seven new-build Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC) and up to seven new-build Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGC) designed to carry gas from the US to China and other global markets.

The Port of New Orleans announced an update regarding its operations ahead of the severe weather currently associated with Tropical Storm Barry. Namely, the Port decided to apply several measures in order to prepare for the storm. The Port has taken measures regarding its cargo operations, cruise operations, bridge operations, and the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal.

Tariffs continue to impact cargo traffic at the Port of Long Beach, where volumes fell in June, in comparison to the same month in 2018. Last June was the busiest month in the Port's 108-year history, and capped the busiest second quarter during the busiest year ever.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance along with the the International Longshore and Warehouse Workers of Local 19, and SSA Terminals, broke ground on July 10 at Terminal 5, marking the first concrete steps in making the facility able to accommodate large ships, adding the capability to handle two of the shipping industry's largest container vessels at the same time.  

Imports at US's major retail container ports will be at high levels this summer, but they are expected to have modest increase in comparison to last year's rush to bring merchandise into the country, due to scheduled tariff increases, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

SEA\LNG has announced that the Port of Virginia has become the first port in the US to join the multi-sector industry coalition, which aims to accelerate the widespread adoption of LNG as a marine fuel. The Port of Virginia is the second North American port alongside the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, and the fifth global port along with the Port of Rotterdam, MPA Singapore, and Yokohama Kawasaki International Port Authority, to join the coalition.

Moody's published a report focusing on the value of container port automation in all applications, warning that the high capital investment, uncertain productivity gains, the potential disruption to ongoing operations and the concerns of labour unions all pose risks to automation projects.
